Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
The suspect, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham court Monday morning, charged over the attack.
Originally charged with attempted murder however after the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened outside Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response when she finished her shift at about 22:00 on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
