Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
