United Nations Ends Restrictions on Syria's Leader Prior to White House Visit
The UN Security Council voted in favour to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting next week.
He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that drove out Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions as the leader of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.
More Penalties Removed
Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".
His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria prior to breaking relations in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit is not the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. In September, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in New York for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
