UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Nations

Methanol caution sign

The UK Foreign Office has placed eleven more countries to its official warning register concerning the dangers of methanol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, officials had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to a number of high-profile cases like the tragic death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even minimal doses of methanol can result in vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.

However in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.

Official Advice for Travelers

Foreign Office minister a senior official said that all travellers should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, stick to trusted places and refrain from homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister warned.

"In case something seems unusual, like a hangover that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."

The full register of destinations identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
