China's Ice Dancers Under Investigation Following Displaying Toy Missile during Event
The International Skating Union have launched an investigation after a pair of Chinese ice dancers appeared with what looked like a replica weapon at a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast video showed the skaters sitting with a sizable prop shaped like a missile labeled “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results in the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.
This model is a new China-produced land-based intercontinental ballistic missile designed for carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled during a national ceremony recently.
Officials is aware that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been among those thrown on to the rink by spectators following a performance during the competition,” the organization commented via a release.
“The soft toy was subsequently held by the skaters after their performance. The ISU apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”
Ren and Xing placed in eighth place out of ten teams in the ice dance event, with the victory going to Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States.
